White Crater

White Crater is one of the most popular attractions in southern Bandung. This  place is can be reached within 2.5 hours of driving from Bandung within normal traffic. White Crater (or called ‘Kawah Putih’ in Indonesian) is part of mount Patuha which is also another active volcano in Bandung area. Due to the strong sulfur smell covering this area, especially in rainy season, it is highly advised that visitors wear masks when entering the area. And as the sulfur concentrate is still considered quite high in the White Crater, all visitors are not allowed to stay for too long here. The maximum length of stay would be no more than 30 minutes. However you have to leave the place right away if you feel unwell or dizzy and you have to be extra cautious if you have asthma problem.

The attraction of the White Crater lies on the lake which can change color from greenish to bluish, depending on the weather. However as the water in the lake is highly acidic, we are not allowed to touch the water at all. Another attraction of White Crater is that we can easily find yellowish to greenish mud surrounding the lake which contains high concentrate of sulfur. This sulfuric mud which is believed to be beneficial to cure skin problems is collected by the locals and dried under the sun and later sold to the visitors.

White Crater is located in the regency of Ciwidey, which is also famous for the national’s largest strawberry producer. That is why it is very easy to find lots of people selling fresh strawberries at the White Crater area. This strawberry shopping is also quite interesting for the tourists visiting the area as they not only can try fresh strawberries but they can also find many other products made from strawberries, such as strawberry crackers, strawberry candies, and many more. Feel free to try the fresh strawberry before you buy some.

Some of you might wonder when is the best time to come to the White Crater. Actually this place is open for public every day from 8 am to 5 pm. However as it is usually more crowded on weekends and all national holidays, it would be better if you come here on the weekdays.

This crater is also one of the most popular spots for photo taking among the tourists, thanks to its natural beauty surrounding the area. So sometimes some people also come here to take pre-wedding photo shoot.

Last but not least, how can we reach this place? Is there any public transportation that passes this area? As public transportation rarely passes this area, the best way to come here would be by private cars or motorcycle. However as it takes quite a long time to reach this place, riding a motorcycle wouldn’t be very convenient at all, especially when it’s raining. Hence the only way would be by private cars (or busses). And to avoid the crowds, especially on high season, it would be better if you come to the White Crater in the morning.
